“World’s Biggest Data Breaches. Selected losses greater than 30,000 records” is a beautiful interactive visualisation by David McCandless of the world’s biggest data breaches from 2004 till today. You might configure different aspects of the visualisation that either highlight the number of records stolen, the sensitivity of the data stolen, or the sector / business domain in which the leak occurred.
In either way, there is a clear trend over time. This exponential increase in data breaches gives an outlook for what we can expect in the following months and years to come if we don’t improve risk management culture and don’t prioritise investments to prevent data breaches.
